What to Pack for a Multi-Day Backcountry Stay in the Rockies

Backcountry gear lists don’t need to be complicated — they need to work. Here's what matters when you're miles from anything, with elevation, weather, and weight all in play.

The Non-Negotiables
  • Waterproof shell (lightweight + breathable)

  • Merino or synthetic base layers

  • Down or synthetic insulated mid-layer

  • Good socks (bring spares)

  • Water filter (Sawyer Squeeze or SteriPEN)

  • Headlamp with spare batteries

  • First aid (actual, not token)

The Sleep System
  • 3-season sleeping bag

  • Compact pillow or stuff sack filled with clothes

  • Optional: lightweight bivy or tarp if you're not staying in a lodge

Kitchen + Food
  • Lightweight stove + fuel

  • Spork + small knife

  • High-calorie, low-bulk meals (dehydrated or dense)

  • Snacks you won’t hate by day 3

Other Good Calls
  • Trekking poles

  • Dry bags

  • Bear spray (and knowledge to use it)

  • Paper map backup

  • Micro towel

Keep it light. Keep it dialled. The Rockies are no place to learn what you forgot after you’re two ridgelines deep.
